Beginning at birth and continuing through the preschool years, children learn skills that are foundational to their later literacy development (i.e., reading, writing). Preschool children with speech and language disorders are at increased risk of difficulty learning to read and write. For this reason, early intervention is critical, because if difficulties persist they can negatively impact a child’s literacy skills in later school years.
